THE PREDICTION
World number one Novak Djokovic won a fascinating first meeting with 19-year-old Jannik Sinner in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters and was broken by the Italian early-on before asserting his dominance. The 33-year-old is a two-time Monte-Carlo champion and has nine ATP 1000 event titles to his name on clay so far in his illustrious career, which is mightily impressive considering he has had to contend with king of clay Rafael Nadal for almost all of them. A second successive first meeting sees the Serb take on world number 33 Dan Evans in the round of 16 for what will be an excellent spectacle on Thursday. 30-year-old Evans won his first ATP title earlier this season in Melbourne and his performances have been strong throughout 2021, even in some recent close defeats to the likes of Roger Federer, Aslan Karatsev and Lorenzo Musetti all via three sets. Having discovered a way to play his silky game on the clay, the British number one has so far overcome Dusan Lajovic and Hubert Hurkacz to reach the round of 16 of a Masters event for the first time but meeting Djokovic is a spot of bad luck. Evans has what it takes to force a decider in this match considering Djokovic was not at his best versus Sinner on Wednesday and that could be worth taking a punt on but the world number one concedes sets to very few players before he reaches the last four of tournaments and the likeliest outcome is straight sets for the Serb.
