THE PREDICTION
21-year-old Alejandro Davidovich Fokina provided the shock of the Monte-Carlo Masters so far when he dismantled the eighth seed Matteo Berrettini in straight sets on Tuesday. The Spaniard had previously overpowered Alex de Minaur in the first round on Monday and he could benefit from an extra day’s rest here as the draw catches up with Monday’s wash out. His opponent, Lucas Pouille, is on the return from a long surgery lay-off but has played brilliantly this week to beat Guido Pella and, most recently, Alexei Popyrin on Wednesday. However, it would not be a surprise to find the Frenchman a little fatigued as this round of 16 tie continues. World number 58 Davidovich Fokina looked in excellent shape against Berrettini and a whole day’s recovery should see him able to weather whatever Pouille can throw at him here. It is great to see the Frenchman back, but take the Spaniard to win this one outright.
