World number 11 Roberto Bautista Agut has taken out back-to-back Americans this week at the Monte Carlo Masters with two straight-sets wins over Taylor Fritz and, on Wednesday, Tommy Paul. The Spaniard turned 34 on Wednesday and has nine ATP titles to his name with his best so far an ATP 500 event at the Dubai Open in 2018. He faces Andrey Rublev for the second time this year having beaten the Russian in straight sets in the semi-finals of the Qatar Open last month before disappointingly losing what should have been his 10th
title to Nikoloz Basilashvili and he leads their head-to-head record 3-2 as a result. That win last month and the superior record would suggest for most players that RBA is the favourite here and yet world number eight is a player who can fuel himself purely on vengeance. The 23-year-old was prolific yet unchallenged against Salvatore Caruso in the second round here and will be determined to put right the missed opportunities he left at the Miami Open two weeks ago with a stronger run to the latter stages. Rublev won the pair’s only clay-court encounter on his way to the Hamburg Open title last season and he can beat the Spaniard here too. Probably in three sets, although it would be safest to opt for outright.
