THE PREDICTION
World number 80 Salvatore Caruso qualified for the first round of the Monte-Carlo Masters with two straight-set wins over Marin Klizan and Bernard Tomic this weekend. The 28-year-old is on a five-match losing streak on tour, though stretching back to a thrilling, bad-tempered five-set defeat to Fabio Fognini in the second round of the Australian Open back in February. Caruso has an excellent opportunity to snap that run against wildcard Lucas Catarina, but his opponent will be experiencing one of the biggest days of his career and that should have plenty of say in this match. Catarina is a Monagasque native which should garner the lion’s share of the support here on Monday and with Caruso in fairly poor form this match has all the ingredients required for an upset. In his last two wildcard appearances here, Catarina lost in impressive three sets to Milos Raonic but comprehensive straight sets a year later to Juame Munar, suggesting he has a chance. Caruso is a hard worker and unlikely to let his guard slip, though, and whilst taking Catarina to win outright as a potential upset could be a fun punt, the likeliest outcome is Caruso to motor through in two.
