THE PREDICTION

28-year-old Marco Cecchinato put the disappointment of losing to Yannick Hanfmann in the round of 16 at the Andalucía Open behind him by comfortably qualifying for the Monte-Carlo Open. He will face another German in Dominik Koepfer here who came through the qualifiers as the first seed. 26-year-old Koepfer is an intriguing player capable of the odd unexpected deep run, with his most recent shock run ending in the semi-finals of the Mexican Open where he lost to the eventual champion Alexander Zverev. Of course shock runs to the semi-finals is something Cecchinato knows all about as the Italian burst onto the scene by reaching the semi-finals of Roland-Garros in 2018. On clay, Cecchinato is the better player but recent form suggests Koepfer could snatch this match. For want of a result, take this first round tussle to go to three sets.
