World number 28 Lorenzo Sonego enters the first round of the Monte-Carlo Open in flying form fresh off the back of winning his second career ATP title at the Sardegna Open on Sunday. The 25-year-old beat an in-form clay specialist in Laslo Djere in Cagliari and if he can avoid the dreaded first match loss after a title win syndrome that so many players fall to he could be fancied for a deep run here in Monaco. There are few players in this first draw that represent more of a potential banana skin to that run than 29-year-old Marton Fucsovics, who holds a 2-0 head-to-head record over Sonego with two wins over the Italian back in 2019. The Hungarian is an impossibly fit individual and he has been in better form than some his results suggest this season, having been unlucky enough to draw his apparent kryptonite Andrey Rublev on four occasions. The result looks hard to side with confidence here. Sonego’s win on clay should see him match-practiced but also possibly fatigued, especially mentally. Take Fucsovics to win the first set or for this match to go to a decider. Or, combine both for a risk.
