THE PREDICTION
This promises to be an excellent first meeting between two of the players to have taken 2021 by storm. 19-year-old Lorenzo Musetti has already beaten the likes of Diego Schwartzman, Grigor Dimitrov and last week Dan Evans this season and he reached the semi-finals of the Mexican Open last month before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Italian looks set to enjoy a breakthrough year in 2021, much like Tsitsipas’ emergence in 2019, and could reach the top 20 by his favoured Wimbledon if he continues in this current form. Aslan Karatsev has come from nowhere as a 27-year-old to burst into the top 30 in the world. The Russian won the ATP Cup alongside Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev before he went on to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open on debut in a miraculous run. More recently, Karatsev won the Dubai Open on debut, too, before a slight and understandable downturn in form at the Miami Open saw him lose in the second round there. Plenty of enigma remains around this match considering the Russian has taken a little break to try and recalibrate but Musetti looked excellent on clay in Sardegna. Take this match to need three sets and leave it there for the safe option, though right now Musetti is an interesting dark horse for a very deep run indeed here in Monte-Carlo and could be backed to shock the player who has shocked everyone else this season.
