THE PREDICTION
2019 Monte-Carlo Open champion Fabio Fognini lost in alarming straight sets to 23-year-old Juame Munar at the Andalucia Open last week but the Italian can spring a surprise from nowhere if you count him out on form alone. The 33-year-old will face Miomir Kecmanovic for the first time as he begins the defence of the Miami Open title, due to last season’s edition being cancelled, and he should step it up on this bigger stage. 21-year-old Kecmanovic enjoyed a fairly decent South American swing on his favoured clay throughout March and lost to the winners of both the Cordoba Open, Juan Manual Cerundolo, and Buenos Aires Open, Diego Schwartzman. This first meeting could well go to three sets but a lot of what happens here will be down to which of the many versions of Fognini arrives on court, though Kecmanovic is in no great shape himself as things stand. Eight of Fognini’s nine ATP titles have come on clay and that is excellent pedigree on this surface. He could be caught out by a few players in this draw but in this current form Kecmanovic is unlikely to be one of them, so take Fognini to win via three sets here.
