THE PREDICTION
World number 40 Marton Fucsovics must be wondering what he did wrong to the tennis gods after drawing world number eight Andrey Rublev for a fourth time this year. The Hungarian played in a tightly-contested and high-octane three-set second round match with the resurgent Thanasi Kokkinakis and deserved a kinder draw for his trouble having lost two times to Rublev this season and being forced to pull out of the other. 29-year-old Fucsovics is in excellent form and did beat Rublev the first time they met way back in 2017 in the Davis Cup but since last summer Rublev has beaten him four times in a row, with both victories this year coming in straight sets, including in the quarter-finals of last week’s Dubai Open which is only Fucsovics’ second-last match. A spot of fate about this match will give the Hungarian the fuel required to take his best to this match but this does look to be a mis-match in overall quality. Rublev’s record against players outside of the top 10 is exceptional and although Fucsovics is good enough to force a decider it does feel like an inevitable straight-sets win for the Russian.
