THE PREDICTION
World number 37 Hubert Hurkacz has already won two ATP titles but the Pole will have announced himself to those who did not know yesterday that he is the real deal. After struggling to deal with an imperious Stefanos Tsitsipas for much of the first hour of their quarter-final, the 24-year-old stayed cool as the Greek lost his rhythm and turned the screw to win the following two sets. Hurkacz will face world number eight Andrey Rublev as one of a few players on tour to have a 100% record over the Russian, having won their only previous match on clay at last year’s Rome Masters. 23-year-old Rublev took a more straight-forward, though highly competitive, straight-sets victory over home favourite Sebastian Korda to reach the last four and he will likely stop at nothing to win the Miami Open now as the highest remaining seed. Indeed, in this form the only two players in this draw reasonably capable of beating the Russian were Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas and with those two out Rublev’s trademark determination should see him through to a title unless one of Roberto Bautista Agut, Jannik Sinner or Hurkacz here play out of their skins.
In many ways, beating Tsitsipas in his mood yesterday is an easier task than trying to knock Andrey Rublev out of a tournament he thinks he can win. The Russian should find himself in the final despite how well Hurkacz has played all fortnight, and add a tiebreak in this match like their last saw in Rome last summer.
