World number 101 Joao Sousa came through an incredibly tough first round match with Australia’s Christian O’Connell in a three-set slog that featured two tiebreaks on Thursday. He will face the 20th
seed Ugo Humbert for the first time at tour level, though he beat the young Frenchman in the qualifying round of the 2017 Paris Masters. Things have changed drastically for world number 30 Humbert since then, though, and if he can get a rhythm going in Miami he could well reach the latter stage of this tournament under the radar. Humbert has lost a couple of matches to lower-ranked players recently but Sousa is likely to be a level below what is required here, with 22-year-old Humbert a particularly good player on the bigger stages.
