THE PREDICTION
World number 42 Jan-Lennard Struff just sneaks into a second-round bye here at the Miami Open as the 31st seed but the German has been in questionable form for a while now since his strong showing at the ATP Cup in February. The 30-year-old will still be the firm favourite to beat Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis as he did two years ago at Indian Wells to extend a 2-0 head-to-head record. Berankis beat Federico Gaio in straight sets on Wednesday but this will be a severe step-up in quality and Miami’s courts suit the hard-hitting, uber-fit German. Both previous matches between the pair have gone to three sets but Berankis has played very few matches this year and that should see Struff get off to a much-needed flier in straight sets.
