The meteoric rise and rise of Aslan Karatsev is something to behold in 2021 and the 27-year-old enters his first ATP 1000 event ever this week, as the 17th seed no less. The world number 27 moved 15 places up the ATP rankings this week after winning his first title at the Dubai Open last Sunday and he has only lost twice in 2021, to Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem. There are very few players in this draw that look able to stop Karatsev in this form and he could be a real dark horse for the title as players continue to fail at working out his unorthodox game. World number 105 Mikhail Kukushkin has his hands full with this match, having been part of a very robust match in the first round against wildcard Jack Draper who was forced to retire with heat exhaustion after the first set. Whilst Kukushkin will benefit from the rest, Karatsev looks to have this match wrapped in straight sets already.
