25-year-old Maria Sakkari survived a tough battle with Jessica Pegula on Monday to reach the quarter-finals at the Miami Open and the Greek will be a real threat to Naomi Osaka’s now 23-match winning streak. World number two Osaka can reach the top of the WTA rankings again this weekend in Miami unless Ash Barty wins the actual title against her and the Japanese star has reached her first quarter-final at this Masters event after a strong straight-sets showing against Elise Mertens on Monday. Osaka is yet to drop a set in Miami, although she has the added the bonus of a walkover in the third round, and looks nigh-on unstoppable at this stage. The likes of Bianca Andreescu or Sara Sorribes Tormo, the last player to beat Osaka back in 2019, in the next round will be an incredible test of the 23-year-old’s resolve but she should be able to take out a powerful opponent in Sakkari here. World number 25 Sakkari trails in a 3-1 head-to-head record with Osaka but has forced a deciding set in each of her three losses to the current US and Australian Open champion, so take Osaka to win this quarter-final in three.
