Considering the way Milos Raonic had played in previous rounds, Hubert Hurkacz’s three-set victory over the world number 19 – and via a deciding tiebreak at that – is one of the more impressive victories of the 24-year-old’s career. World number 37 Hurkacz has equalled his best showing at a Masters event by reaching the quarter-finals here in Miami and he gets a chance at almost immediate redemption after narrowly losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas at last month’s Rotterdam Open. That defeat was Hurkacz’s sixth in a pretty hefty 6-1 head-to-head record favouring world number five Tsitsipas but the match was one of five-straight three-set encounters between the two over the last three years and that promises a real show in this quarter-final. 22-year-old Tsitsipas was assured in his round of 16 clash with Lorenzo Sonego, facing no break points on his rock-solid service games against the unpredictable Italian to make the quarters with little fuss. Three wins in a row over Hurkacz will give the Greek confidence but also aid the Pole’s clearly exemplary determination to exact revenge here. This match looks like needing an inevitable decider and given how well Hurkacz has played this week it could be worth leaving it there. However, a 6-1 record backs second seed Tsitsipas to come through in three in what is a must-watch match.
