THE PREDICTION
32-year-old Marin Cilic has lost in the first round of three of his four tournaments played so far this year, exiting early at the Murray River Open, Australian Open and then last week at the Mexican Open in a disappointing straight-sets defeat to Sebastian Korda. The former world number three is of course a former Grand Slam champion in the US and won his only Masters title to date in Cincinnati but his best for is well past him now. The world number 45 is still a dangerous opponent in the draw, especially fresh, but his 2021 record leaves a way in for world number 84 Federico Coria who has already played 10 games this year to achieve a 5-5 record. The Argentine played a full South American swing in which he made the semi-finals of the Cordoba Open but he has dwindled slightly since losing to 19-year-old Juan Manuel Cerundolo there. Coria will be aware of his opponent’s poor form and there is the sense of an upset around this first encounter. As a one-off punt, taking Coria to win here could be a shrewd move indeed but otherwise take this match to see at least one tiebreak between two players well accustomed to a 7-6 set.
