THE PREDICTION
This is a really intriguing first meeting between the evergreen Feliciano Lopez and 21-year-old Alexei Popyrin, who turned pro a full 20 years after his first round Miami Open opponent. 39-year-old Lopez plays for the fun of it these days as his career winds down but the former world number 12 is always a consummate professional and is well capable of beating the younger generations, just like his five-set thriller against Lorenzo Sonego at the Australian Open last month. Australian Popyrin also won a massive five-set encounter against the 15th seed David Goffin in Melbourne and that form took him onto a first ATP title at the Singapore Open that spring-boarded him back into the top 100. This is the sort of early-round Grand Slam match that would be a good shout for five sets and so three here in Miami looks a reasonable option to take. Further than that is subject to a spot of guesswork, though.
