THE PREDICTION
19-year-old Italian Lorenzo Musetti is causing a stir in Acapulco right now as the qualifier beat Diego Schwartzman in the first round here before a three-set comeback win over Frances Tiafoe in the round of 16 on Thursday. The world number 120 made some deep runs at the Rome Masters and Sardinia Open last year after the restart of the tennis season but this is his first tour-level tournament in 2021 as he gears up for what could be a breakthrough year. This is exactly the kind of match-up that world number 16 Grigor Dimitrov can do one of two things in, namely completely blitz his inexperienced opponent or take his eye off the ball and suffer a not-so surprising upset. The Bulgarian is a frustrating player to predict these days with all the talent and ability mixed in with the unreliability that makes him so exciting to watch. 29-year-old Dimitrov has so far beaten Adrian Mannarino and Miomir Kecmanovic without dropping a set but there is the hint of an upset about this match thanks to Musetti’s performances. It is tempting simply to opt for three sets here and leave the winner up to chance, though realistically it should be Dimitrov coming through.
