World number nine Karolina Pliskova has won a Masters event before at the 2016 Cincinnati Open and came so close to claiming a clay-court 1000 event last year in Rome where she was forced to retire from the final against Simona Halep. The tall Czech is strong across all surfaces and reached the round of 16 at last week’s Stuttgart Open before losing in three sets to eventual champion Ashleigh Barty. It usually takes the very best like Barty and Halep to take Pliskova out of a tournament when she is on song but Coco Gauff continues to be an outlier on the WTA tour. The world number 35 will take on Pliskova for the first time here in what looks set to be a thrilling first round match, and the 17-year-old has reached the quarter-finals or above in three of her last four tournaments. It is difficult not to back the higger0ranked player in Pliskova but if Gauff can get a rhythm on her opponent’s serve this match could need a decider.
