World number 13 Garbine Muguruza will be well-supported here in Madrid as a home favourite and that could go a long way for the Spaniard, who savours big matches. The 27-year-old is a former Roland-Garros champion and has excellent pedigree on this surface, though she was forced to retire from her most recent match in Charleston earlier this month and her fitness could be an issue here. Muguruza will face former US Open champion Sloane Stephens for a fifth time with their head-to-head record finely poised at 2-2. 28-year-old Stephens is currently ranked at 51 in the WTA world rankings but on her way back to form, which showed in her reaching the quarter-finals in Charleston. However, Muguruza won their most recent meeting at last year’s Rome Masters in straight sets and that could be a benchmark for this first round tie. Given Muguruza’s fitness is of some small concern, take the Spaniard to win this outright.
