THE PREDICTION
This looks a more difficult pick than at first glance between Istanbul Cup first seed Elise Mertens and Sorana Cirstea after their excellent performances this week. 31-year-old Cirstea is a very strong clay-court player and has come all the way to the final without dropping a set after a confident display against 18-year-old Marta Kostyuk on Saturday and she has beaten Mertens in both their previous meetings. However, the world number 17 has been in fine form this year already and won the Gippsland Trophy back in Melbourne to kick off a strong season. Mertens should be winning this on 2021 form but world number 67 Cirstea is particularly good when backed into a corner and picking a result here looks a little unsafe. It should be a win for Mertens here but take the match to go to three sets with a fightback from either player likely.
