THE LOWDOWN
In-form world number 43 Yulia Putintseva beat the 13th seed and fellow Kazakh Elena Rybakina in straight sets on Friday in a vastly impressive display. The 26-year-old took out Andrea Petkovic in the first round in straight sets too to continue her good form from the Astana Open last weekend, where she took the first set in the final against Alison Van Uytvanck before a disappointing defeat. Putintseva won her second career WTA title back in July at the Hungarian Grand Prix. 24th seed Jelena Ostapenko was ruthless in her first match of the campaign, taking out Su-Wei Hsieh with just three games conceded. The Latvian won the Eastbourne International back in June to make it now four career titles at 24 years old, with that stunning run to the 2017 Roland-Garros title still very much the crowning glory.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a fascinating fourth meeting between Yulia Putintseva and Jelena Ostapenko with the Kazakh leading their head-to-head record 2-1 and probably in the better form right now. Putintseva has beaten Ostapenko twice on hardcourts at the 2016 Beijing Open and 2019 Cincinnati Open, both in three sets, with Ostapenko taking their second round match at the 2017 Australian Open in two. This match looks like needing three sets but the winner is a very tough call to make. Taking Putintseva to win at least one could be a valuable pick here or for the match to need a decider.
