25th seed Veronika Kudermetova was efficient in her straight-sets victory over fellow Russian Liudmila Samsonova to reach the third round at Indian Wells on her main draw debut. The 24-year-old won her first WTA title earlier this year at the WTA 500 Charleston Open on clay during her best form on tour this season. World number four Iga Swiatek conceded just four games to an out-of-sorts Petra Martic in the second round as the second seed here at Indian Wells. The 20-year-old is already a Grand Slam and Masters champion on clay from last season’s Roland-Garros and this year’s Italian Open but she also won on hard at the Adelaide Open earlier this season.
THE PREDICTION
This could be an entertaining second meeting between Iga Swiatek and Veronika Kudermetova, with Swiatek the winner of their only previous encounter in straight sets at the US Open last season. The Pole looks confident and assured so far at Indian Wells and her ruthless defeat of Martic in the second round suggests she will take some serious stopping. Kudermetova is capable of forcing a decider here but realistically Swiatek can take this in two once again.
