31-year-old Sorana Cirstea just snuck into the Indian Wells seeding at 32nd as the world number 40 and she played like one in a straight-sets victory over Misaki Doi. The Romanian claimed her second-ever WTA title earlier this year at the Istanbul Open a whole 13 years after her first trophy at the Tashkent Open in 2008 and other notable achievements this season include wins over Victoria Azarenka at Wimbledon and Petra Kvitova at the Australian Open. World number seven Elina Svitolina got her Indian Wells campaign underway with a straight-sets victory over Tereza Martincova on Friday. The 27-year-old won the 16th title of her career at the Chicago Women’s Open back in August before a run to the quarter-finals at the US Open. The Ukrainian has won three Masters titles with back-to-back wins in Rome in 2017 and 2018 and the Canadian Open in 2017.
THE PREDICTION
This is an intriguing match-up between Sorana Cirstea and Elina Svitolina with the Romanian in strong form and capable of defeating the Ukrainian for the first time. Svitolina has won both of their previous encounters in straight sets on clay at Roland-Garros in 2016 and the Istanbul Open in 2017 – a tournament Cirstea went on to win this year. Fourth seed Svitolina is still the solid favourite but Cirstea forcing a decider and even going on to win would not be a huge surprise.
