THE LOWDOWN
World number 61 Irina Camelia-Begu caused one of the shocks of the second round by taking out in-form Jil Teichmann in straight sets. The Romanian recently lost to Anett Kontaveit in the final of Tennis in the Land in Cleveland and the third round of Wimbledon but taking out the Swiss in straight sets is vastly impressive form. The 31-year-old last won a tournament at home at the Bucharest Open in 2017 for a total of four career titles so far. Like Begu, world number 44 Shelby Rogers is yet to drop a set at Indian Wells with two assured performances so far. The 28-year-old has gathered some impressive performances in recent months, beating Ash Barty in the third round of the US Open and Bianca Andreescu last week at the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic.
THE PREDICTION
Shelby Rogers beat Irina-Camelia Begu in straight sets in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros back in 2016 with both players vying for a first Grand Slam quarter-final. This looks a very difficult rematch to call five years on with both players impressing so far at Indian Wells. Rogers’ win over Andreescu last week was as excellent as her subsequent defeat to Mai Hontama was poor and that kind of inconsistency also revealed itself at the US Open where she lost to Emma Raducanu after beating the world number one. For that reason, and that Begu took out in-form Jil Teichmann on Friday, take the Romanian to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners.
