Leylah Fernandez is up to her career-high 28th in the WTA world rankings after a stunning run to the US Open final last month and the 19-year-old has started Indian Wells in much the same mood. The Canadian conceded just five games to Alize Cornet in a comfortable first match at Indian Wells and will have taken note of Emma Raducanu’s loss in the same round, with a point to prove here. Fernandez is playing, and fabulously well, in the Women’s Doubles alongside 17-year-old Coco Gauff for a blockbuster pairing and their performances will only help her in the singles.
30-year-old Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is set to break her own career-high WTA ranking no matter the outcome here with a live place at 10th following a comprehensive win over Madison Keys. The Russian has 12 WTA titles to her name so far and she reached a first Grand Slam final this season in defeat to Barbora Krejcikova at Roland-Garros.
THE PREDICTION
The Indian Wells crowd received Leylah Fernandez like one of their own on Friday night and another night match on Court 1 is sure to be a fantastic spectacle. The 19-year-old won her first WTA final earlier this season at the Monterrey Open but her run at the US Open would be the crowning achievement of most players on tour. Taking out two multiple Grand Slam champions in Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber and then fifth seed Elina Svitolina and second seed Aryna Sabalenka is truly outstanding. If she has even half of that form left in her, and her performances so far suggest so, she can overcome a strong test in this first meeting from Pavlyuchenkova. Take the teenager to win outright with the full support of a partisan crowd.
