World number 63 Jasmine Paolini is in the form of her life right now and after a great first ever WTA title at the Slovenia Open three weeks ago she has beaten the world number 18 Elise Mertens for a career-best victory. The 25-year-old came back from a set down to take out Mertens on Friday to reach the third round on what has been an impressive debut indeed. World number 24 Jessica Pegula ousted Sloane Stephens in comfortable fashion late on Friday night in form set to threaten the rest of the draw. The 27-year-old won her only title to date at the Washington Open back in 2019 but a quarter-final at the Australian Open earlier this year is proof of her potential for more.
THE PREDICTION
Jessica Pegula should be considered a dark horse for a deep run here in conditions that suit her and in front of a home crowd but Jasmine Paolini has greatly improved her game this season. Pegula has won both of their previous meetings in straight sets but this will be their first tour-level match. Paolini is hard to predict right now in this form and Pegula’s penchant for a three-setter suggests taking the American to win outright within an accumulator, or to win 2-1 as a one-off, are the likeliest way this one will fall.
