THE LOWDOWN
World number 28 Grigor Dimitrov managed to avoid a potential banana skin in his first match at Indian Wells with a comfortable straight-sets win over Daniel Altmaier. The 30-year-old reached a career-high third in the ATP world rankings in the stand-out season his career back in 2017, where he won his only Masters title to date in Cincinnati and then the year-end ATP Finals. Dimitrov beat Aslan Karatsev last week in San Diego and almost took out the eventual champion Casper Ruud in flashes of some returning form. World number 20 Reilly Opelka reached his first Masters final back in August at the Canadian Open before losing out to Daniil Medvedev. The 24-year-old has been in superb form in the second-half of this season and he was assured in his defeat of Taro Daniel on Saturday to reach the third round of Indian Wells for a first time.
THE PREDICTION
This could be a thriller on Monday and a quick rematch for Grigor Dimitrov and Reilly Opelka after their first meeting fell in straight sets to the American back at the Canadian Open. Opelka’s form was at its peak in Canada, where he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the final, whilst Dimitrov was not. Two months on and the Bulgarian looks like he is enjoying his tennis in the desert so far, with a strong run at San Diego last week building momentum. Opelka should still enjoy the conditions on his service game but many players are finding the courts slow this week and that could limit his effectiveness if Dimitrov turns up. Take Opelka to win at least a set here as the likelier of two very capable winners.
