THE LOWDOWN
Former world number one Simona Halep beat Marta Kostyuk in an impressive, aggressive straight-sets performance to reach the third round at Indian Wells. The 30-year-old is a two-time Grand Slam champion making her return to the top of the game after several frustrating injuries from this and last season but a run to the round of 16 at the US Open last month came ahead of that curve. World number 100 Aliaksandra Sasnovich has found some good form at Indian Wells with two straight-set wins over Maria Camila Osorio Serrano and the US Open champion Emma Raducanu. The 27-year-old is no pushover with a career-high 30th in the world achieved just three years ago after a run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon was ended by Jelena Ostapenko.
THE PREDICTION
Halep was the winner in straight sets back in 2019 when they first met in the first round of Wimbledon. The Romanian would go on to win her second Grand Slam with an electrifying victory over Serena Williams two weeks later and we have not seen that version of her since due to injuries and the pandemic. She should have more than enough to oust Sasnovich once again here but the Belarussian’s victory over US Open champion Emma Raducanu on Friday is in keeping with her recent strong form. Halep in straight sets is what should happen but the cautious pick is for her to win outright here instead.
