THE LOWDOWN
Maria Sakkari broke the top 10 last week after losing out to Anett Kontaveit in the Ostrava Open final. The 26-year-old is at a career-high ninth in the world and she looks set to qualify for the year-end WTA Finals to become the first Greek woman to do so. Sakkari has plenty of scope for more success here at Indian Wells after she reached the semi-finals of the Miami Open earlier this season and the semi-finals at the US Open just last month. Viktorija Golubic also reached her career-high WTA world ranking this season and she is just one place off that now at 46th. The 28-year-old won a Silver medal alongside Belinda Bencic in the Women’s Doubles event at the Tokyo Olympic Games but she has also performed well on her own with a superb run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.
THE PREDICTION
This is a tough opening draw for Maria Sakkari but the Greek is very rarely stopped at the first hurdle. There does seem to be something of a mental block with her ability to perform under the tightest of pressure, with her loss to Emma Raducanu in the semi-finals of the US Open particularly below par, but with the WTA Finals looming the newly-crowned world number nine looks the solid favourite to win here. Golubic is well capable of forcing a decider and Sakkari can sometimes let a player in against the run of play, so take her to win outright.
