World number 123 Taro Daniel played well to concede just six games to German veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber on Thursday to reach the second round of Indian Wells for the second time. The 28-year-old once famously beat Novak Djokovic here in 2018 to reach the third round, where he lost to Leonardo Mayer in straight sets. Daniel won his only ATP title to date in the same year on clay at the Istanbul Open. Reilly Opelka reached a career-high 19th in the world this time last month and at 20th now he is in the form of his life. That is yet to transfer into a first title in 2021, and a third overall, but he reached his first Masters final at the Canadian Open last month before defeat to Daniil Medvedev for some serious progress.
THE PREDICTION
The arid conditions here should suit Reilly Opelka’s American brand of power serving and the 24-year-old could be one to watch this week in Indian Wells as a result. He should have won in the round of 16 of the US Open last month against Lloyd Harris but victories over Stefanos Tsitsipas, Roberto Bautista Agut and Nick Kyrgios at the Canadian Open show what he has been capable of recently. Taro Daniel is a hard man to predict with the Japanese occasionally capable of big upsets but on this occasion he should find Opelka’s serve too difficult to break. Take the American to win in two.
