World number 33 Tamara Zidansek is enjoying a breakthrough year on tour after a first WTA title won at the Lausanne Ladies Open and a stunning run to the Roland-Garros semi-finals. The 23-year-old’s form has faltered a bit since the close of the clay swing but she beat Sloane Stephens last week at the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic to suggest a possible corner being turned. 23-year-old Ana Konjuh is a player who has been desperately seeking that corner for herself for years. The former world number 20 won her first title at 17 years old at the 2015 Nottingham Open but she has suffered injuries, surgeries and everything in between since then. Konjuh made the final of the Serbia Open this season before retiring from the final.
THE PREDICTION
World number 80 Ana Konjuh made the second round of Indian Wells as a seed last time she was here in 2017 and the Croat’s straight-sets win over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova will have felt good on Thursday. Her ability is without question of top 20 potential, as she has proven before, so with 26th seed Tamara Zidansek not quite reaching her heights in the second-half of the season this is an intriguing first meeting indeed. It could go either way but taking Konjuh to win at least a set here looks a shrewd move, although leaving her matches out of accumulators is essential.
