World number 49 Frances Tiafoe beat Benoit Paire in straight sets on Thursday to reach the second round of Indian Wells for only the second time. The 23-year-old’s recent run to the round of 16 at the US Open is testament to what he can achieve with a crowd’s boisterous backing and given the likelihood of Indian Wells granting him night matches in front of as many spectators he could be one to watch out for this week. World number 40 Sebastian Korda won his first ATP title earlier this year at the Emilia-Romagna Open on clay and a run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon was even more impressive on his debut there. The 20-year-old also made the quarter-finals at the Miami Open earlier this season which puts him in good stead at Indian Wells.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a crowd-pleaser and possibly the match of the round between two Americans of the present and future in 23-year-old Frances Tiafoe and 20-year-old Sebastian Korda. World number 40 Korda just snuck through to the seeding on his Indian Wells debut at his career-high 40th in the ATP world rankings but that might hinder him against Tiafoe with the world number 49 already battle-hardened. A confident performance against Paire in the first round gives the showman some momentum and that makes picking him to earn at least a set as the likelier winner here a suitable option.
