World number 135 Salvatore Caruso came through the qualifiers as the second seed comfortably and the Italian took that form into the first round with a comprehensive straight-sets win over Zachary Svajda. The 28-year-old has endured a torrid 2021 season, winning just four tour-level matches for a woeful 4-18 record. World number 23 Aslan Karatsev has come entirely in the different direction after he stunned the tennis world at the Australian Open back in February by reaching the semi-finals as a relatively unknown qualifier. Since then the Russian has won his first title at the ATP 500 Dubai Open, as well as helping Team Russia to lift the ATP Cup at the start of the year. The 28-year-old is up to a career-high 23rd in the ATP world rankings after reaching the San Diego quarter-finals last week.
THE PREDICTION
Aslan Karatsev remains an intriguing character on tour capable of beating anybody, with his best performance coming in a Serbia Open semi-finals victory over Novak Djokovic earlier this year. The Russian is best on hard courts but we have yet to see the return of his best level from Melbourne back in February. He beat Hubert Hurkacz last week in San Diego with flashes of it but he can beat Salvatore Caruso in straight sets here without it.
