22-year-old Casper Ruud is proving his doubters wrong week in week out this season after winning his fifth ATP title of the year last week, his first on a hard court, at the San Diego Open. The Norwegian star now has a total of six titles to his name, three of which he won in an incredible July streak back-to-back-to-back at the Bastad, Gstaad and Kitzbuhel Open. World number 85 Roberto Carballes Baena beat Argentine qualifier Renzo Olivo in straight sets on Thursday to reach the second round of Indian Wells for a second time. The Spaniard won his only ATP title to date at the Quito Open in 2018, also on clay.
THE PREDICTION
It is no surprise to find that these two clay aficionados have met several times on clay over the years, with world number 10 Casper Ruud the winner on all three occasions. Now, though, the Norwegian has thrown that tired ‘clay-specialist’ label aside with his win in San Diego last week on a hard court his first on the surface and he has already proven his ability to win back-to-back tournaments this season. Carballes Baena would have little chance on clay against Ruud in this form and he has even less here. Take in-form Ruud to win in straight sets.
