THE LOWDOWN
World number 45 Petra Martic beat Katie Volynets in straight sets on Wednesday to reach the second round of Indian Wells for a third time. The Croat made the quarter-finals here in 2018 before defeat to then world number one Simona Halep and she possesses a great game for her favoured hard surface with an excellent serve. She faces a tough test in world number four Iga Swiatek, though, with the Pole up to a career-best ranking after winning two more WTA titles this season to go with her superb 2020 Roland-Garros title. 20-year-old Swiatek won the Adelaide International at the start of year before claiming her first Masters title at the Italian Open.
THE PREDICTION
World number four Iga Swiatek will make her Indian Wells debut as the second seed here in California and she has the game to go all the way to the final if she can rediscover her ruthless streak. The Pole has already enjoyed a successful year on tour at just 20 years ago but the high bar she set herself by winning in Paris last season suggests she could have expected more. It takes a truly top player to beat the Pole even when she is not playing her best, with only two of her 12 defeats this season coming close to shocks. Martic is an excellent player but after a promising spring her form has faded fairly quickly. Take Swiatek to win this in two as she so often does.
