World number three Stefanos Tsitsipas started the season off like a house on fire with a run to the Australian Open semi-finals but he burst into his best form on the clay swing with wins at the Monte-Carlo Open, his first Masters title, and the Lyon Open. Elsewhere, he lost in three sets to Rafael Nadal in the final of the Barcelona Open and later in agonising fashion to Novak Djokovic in the final of Roland-Garros from two sets up. The 22-year-old has achieved just two wins against top 20 opponents since in an understandable deflation from his summer heights. World number 61 Pedro Martinez is enjoying his best season on tour with a career-high of 59th achieved last month looking set to be broken very soon. The 24-year-old faced a winnable first fixture at Indian Wells and he seized it with both hands, conceding just four games to Roberto Marcora on Friday.
THE PREDICTION
Stefanos Tsitsipas met Pedro Martinez on tour for the first time back in June in the second round of Roland-Garros, beating the Spaniard in straight sets on his way to the final there. The Greek has not quite been himself since that fateful final in Paris but should not struggle to emulate his performance against Martinez for a second-successive straight sets win here.
