THE LOWDOWN
Ons Jabeur is up to a career-high 14th in the WTA world rankings after reaching the final of the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic last week, in what has been her best year in tour by a mile. The 26-year-old took the first set against Garbine Muguruza in Chicago before defeat but she is still well on her way to qualifying for the season-end WTA Finals and her goal to be the first Arab to do so. World number 65 Anastasija Sevastova came back from a set down to beat Polona Hercog in the first round here on Thursday. The 31-year-old reached a career-high fourth in the WTA world rankings back in 2018 and she has four titles to her name.
THE PREDICTION
Sevastova won the first meeting between the two on clay back in 2017 but Jabeur levelled their head-to-head record up at 1-1 with a three-set victory in the semi-finals of the Kremlin Cup a year later. The Tunisian was a good player then but she is fast becoming a top 10 contender in the sport and she has a target to reach for extra motivation at Indian Wells with that WTA Finals qualification in mind. Jabeur should win this in two but Sevastova is well capable of forcing a decider, so take Jabeur as outright winner here.
