THE LOWDOWN

25-year-old Matteo Berrettini is up to a career-high seventh in the ATP world rankings in what has been his best season on tour. The Italian won the Serbia Open on clay and a first ATP 500 event at Queen’s on grass to show for his all-court prowess but a first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon three weeks later suggests there is major success in his future. World number 184 Alejandro Tabilo has played well so far this week on his Indian Wells debut and is yet to drop a set from the qualifiers through to an impressive first round win over Denis Kudla.

THE PREDICTION

Alejandro Tabilo’s emotional win over Denis Kudla on Friday, a first in the main draw of a Masters event, will be a powerful force for Matteo Berrettini to stop in this second round meeting. The fifth seed has required top-quality players to oust him from tournaments this season in a remarkable stretch of consistency – only two players outside the top 25 in Alexander Bublik and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina have caught the big-server off guard for an incredible 38-9 win-record. There is, though, just the slightest scent of an upset about this match that makes taking Berrettini to go through in straight sets a tricky pick. Take the cautious approach here in the shape of an outright win for the Italian.
