22-year-old Alejandro Davidovich Fokina just about missed out on the seedings here at Indian Wells as world number 43 but he will be a danger to anyone in the draw. The Spaniard came back from a set down against Steve Johnson on Thursday to reach the second round of Indian Wells on his debut. ADF reached a career-high 32nd in the world earlier this year after a stunning run to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros. Another man making deep runs at Grand Slams this season is Lloyd Harris, who is currently at his career-high ranking of 31st after reaching the quarter-finals of the US Open. The 24-year-old beat Rafael Nadal back in August for a career-best win and he reached his first ATP 500 final in Dubai, losing to Aslan Karatsev.
THE PREDICTION
This promises to be a really enjoyable first meeting between two young players who look well-equipped to spend the best part of the decade in the top 50 at least. 24-year-old Lloyd Harris is one of the most improved players on tour this season and he had the potential to beat Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals at the US Open before letting the occasion, and some resultant drinks spillages, get the better of him. On a hard court he probably edges this contest with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, whose excellent 2021 form seems to be mostly behind him for the year. There is probably a set in this for both players so take Harris as the outright winner here.
