THE LOWDOWN
27-year-old Lauren Davis was assured in a straight-sets victory over Nuria Parrizaz-Diaz on Thursday to set-up an All-American second round tie with Danielle Collins. The world number 97 reached a career-high of 26th in the WTA world rankings back in 2017 after winning her only WTA title to date at the Auckland Open. Up until this Summer world number 25 Danielle Collins was yet to win a WTA title but a 12-match winning streak over July and August saw her win her first at the Palermo Open and then immediately better that with a WTA 500 win at the Silicon Valley Classic. Collins, also 27, reached the quarter-finals in Chicago last week and she will have big plans for Indian Wells.
THE PREDICTION
Since her stunning run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open as a debutant in 2019, Danielle Collins has been working up to the form she currently finds herself in. The 27-year-old now knows how to win tournaments and she should be able to beat her career-high 23rd in the WTA world rankings this year if she stays fit. A first meeting with Lauren Davis is sure to be an exciting match with both players hard to get past but at this stage of their careers Collins should be the woman to see the third round.
