THE LOWDOWN
World number 21 Lorenzo Sonego has enjoyed a successful season overall with excellent runs to the semi-finals of the Italian Open, the round of 16 at Wimbledon, and a second career title at the Sardegna Open. Since Wimbledon he has occasionally been caught out, a first round loss to Oscar Otte at the US Open the most notable of those, but he is a threat to anyone on tour on his day. Former world number five Kevin Anderson beat Jordan Thompson in the first round of Indian Wells and looked assured in doing so. The 35-year-old won his first title in two years at the Hall of Fame Open back in July and he has finished runner-up at two Grand Slams at the US Open in 2017 and Wimbledon a year later.
THE PREDICTION
This is a really intriguing second round match as a first meeting between Kevin Anderson and Lorenzo Sonego. The Italian should come through the winner as the more in form and higher-ranked player and yet his defeat to Oscar Otte at the US Open puts this clash with a reasonably similar opponent in the potential upset pile. That does a disservice to Anderson, too, who can occasionally when fit and firing still put in some performances that hark back to his halcyon days rubbing shoulders with the top of the game. Keep this match well away from an accumulator but taking the South African veteran to win at least a set here could be a shrewd one-off option here. Perhaps at least one tiebreak in the match could be a useful addition too.
