World number 29 Karen Khachanov won the Paris Masters in a career-best season back in 2018 but he has slowly fallen away from the top 10 since then. After a fairly torrid period from last season to this, the Russian burst back into form at Wimbledon to reach the quarter-finals there and he then won Silver at the Tokyo Olympic Games in a defeat to Alexander Zverev. World number 78 Emil Ruusuvuori came back from a set down to beat Dominik Koepfer in the first round of his Indian Wells debut. The 22-year-old beat Zverev earlier this season in an excellent run at the Miami Open before defeat to Jannik Sinner in the round of 16 and he has reached two semi-finals on US hardcourts at Atlanta and Winston-Salem.
THE PREDICTION
25-year-old Karen Khachanov still has plenty of space in his career for a second wind but it remains to be seen which version of the Russian takes to the court on Sunday evening to face Emil Ruusuvuori. The world number 29 has struggled off the biggest stages this season and lost to plenty of lower-ranked players who knew to stay in the game with him but his Silver Medal and matching his Grand Slam record are solid achievements to build on. Emil Ruusuvuori is an exciting prospect for the future but especially on the hard surface and seemingly in America so far with impressive performances across the season here. The Finn is well capable of forcing a decider in this one with Khachanov likely to drop a set based on recent form, so take Ruusuvuori to win at least a set and leave the winner up to chance.
