World number 14 Jannik Sinner is riding a four-match winning streak into Indian Wells after defending his first-ever ATP title at the Sofia Open. That win was his third title this year after also taking the Great Ocean Road Open trophy in Melbourne at the start of 2021 and a first ATP 500 event at the Washington Open back in August. The 20-year-old is well in the race to qualify for the ATP Finals which would be a huge achievement on their first staging in Italy. World number 58 John Millman failed to defend his first title two weeks ago at the Astana Open, where he lost in the quarter-finals to Marcos Giron. The 32-year-old got off to an impressive start at Indian Wells, though, via an intense three-set match with Jack Sock that ended with a little bit of afters at the net.
THE PREDICTION
This first meeting between Jannik Sinner and John Millman has plenty of promise to be an exciting match between Millman’s brick-wall defence and Sinner’s sniper shots. The Italian is the favourite to come through and should be considered an outside contender here in California after his win at the Washington Open but after Millman’s match with Sock there is scope for three sets here. Sinner has occasionally started slow at tournaments this year and a fired-up Millman to snatch a set would not be a surprise, so take Sinner to win outright.
