31-year-old Guido Pella came back from a set down against in-form Soonwoo Kwon on Thursday to reach the second round of Indian Wells for a fourth time. The Spaniard reached two finals and the semi-finals of the Miami Open earlier this season but his form has faltered considerably in the second half.
THE PREDICTION
Bautista Agut was a Masters finalist in 2016 where he lost to Andy Murray at the Shanghai Open and if he can find his early-season level he remains a threat to any player not called Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal on tour. He has won all three previous meetings with Guido Pella and yet there is the scent of an upset about this clash with the Argentine in resilient form after a disappointing overall season. Injuries have plagued Pella’s year but when he has been fit he has challenged the likes of Mateo Berrettini and beaten Fabio Fognini and David Goffin. Bautista Agut is still the favourite to win here but taking Pella to win at least a set looks a shrewd move.
