THE LOWDOWN
World number 73 Gianluca Mager grabbed one of the upsets of the first round at Indian Wells with a comeback win in three sets over Marton Fucsovics. The 26-year-old is probably at his most comfortable on the clay but a strong run at the Sofia Open last week saw him reach the quarter-finals before a defeat to Gael Monfils, whom he faces once again here. World number 18 Monfils lost to Jannik Sinner in the final in Sofia as part of his welcome return to form after a torrid first two-thirds of the season. The 35-year-old has made at least the quarter-finals in three of his last five tournaments, including at the Canadian Open where he lost to John Isner. Nine of the Frenchman’s 10 ATP titles have come on hardcourts and he has twice made the quarter-finals at Indian Wells, in 2016 and 2018.
THE PREDICTION
This could be something of a thriller if Gianluca Mager brings his best game for a rematch with Gael Monfils. The popular Frenchman will garner the vast majority of the support and he has welcomed the return of fans with gusto, with a graph depicting his form alongside crowd attendances likely to show a strong positive correlation. Mager last beat a player inside the top 20 in his shock run to the Rio Open final last year, taking out the pre-tournament favourite Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals. On clay this could go either way but Monfils on a hardcourt in front of a loud crowd should egg him onto making his best shots for the win here. Mager is well capable of taking this to three, though.
