World number 30 Fabio Fognini has endured a difficult season on tour with plenty of impressive performances coming too sporadically for any significant title-challenges. The 34-year-old has nine ATP titles to his name with eight of those coming on clay including a solitary Masters title from the 2019 Monte-Carlo Open. Fognini has never made it past the round of 16 at Indian Wells. World number 54 Jan-Lennard Struff reached the Munich Open final this season before losing to Nikoloz Basilashvili as a player also best-suited to the clay. The 31-year-old has struggled for the same form that saw him reach a career-high 29th in the world last season but he got off to a winning start at Indian Wells with a straight-sets win over Daniel Elahi Galan.
THE PREDICTION
Fognini leads a head-to-head record with Struff 2-1 after winning their most recent encounter back in August at the Canadian Open in three sets. They are one win apiece at Masters events after Struff beat the Italian at the Monte-Carlo Open in 2018 – a tournament Fognini would go on to win a year later. Neither player is at their best right now and there it looks like sets are in this match for both of them so taking Fognini to repeat his Canadian Open feat looks the likeliest way this tight match should fall.
