This time last season Diego Schwartzman was winning the race for the eighth position in the year-end ATP Finals but now at world number 15 he has struggled to maintain that level. The 29-year-old is still a danger to any player outside the top 10, though, and he is pretty consistent against players ranked below him despite a loss to Botic van de Zandschulp in the round of 16 at the US Open. The Argentine is an excellent player on all surfaces but he became a Masters finalist last season at the Italian Open on his favoured clay. 24-year-old Maxime Cressy is up to a career-high 145th in the ATP world rankings after earning the best win of his career so far with a five-set first round shock of Pablo Carreno Busta at the US Open last month. The naturalised American came back from a set down to beat Laslo Djere in the first round at Indian Wells on his debut.
THE PREDICTION
Maxime Cressy’s victory over then world number 12 Pablo Carreno Busta at the US Open last month was a stunning achievement but eh failed to really back it up in a straight-sets defeat to Nikoloz Basilashvili. The 24-year-old’s career is still relatively young but that performance, a career-high ranking and a first quarter-final reached at the Hall of Fame Open is a good return for 2021. All that being said, world number 15 Diego Schwartzman is rarely beaten by players ranked significantly below him. He may have a ceiling when it comes to the current top nine players on tour but he is a tireless professional who should come through this match in straight sets.
