THE LOWDOWN
World number 13 Denis Shapovalov came close to reaching his career-high 10th in the world he achieved last season after a stunning run to the semi-finals at Wimbledon back in July. However, the 22-year-old has lost six of his nine matches since losing to Novak Djokovic in the last four and it is always hard to predict when the maverick Canadian’s form is set to return to him. Shapovalov still has just one ATP title to his name from the 2019 Stockholm Open but he was a Masters finalist later that year where he again lost to Novak Djokovic at the Paris Masters. World number 68 Vasek Pospisil eventually overcame J.J. Wolf in the first round at Indian Wells but a smashed racket en route to the second round suggests the 31-year-old is frustrated with his current level. The Canadian reached a career-high 25th in the ATP world rankings back in 2014.
THE PREDICTION
Fellow Canadians Vasek Pospisil and Denis Shapovalov made a superb doubles partnership at the Davis Cup back in 2019, taking Canada all the way to a first final before losing to Rafael Nadal’s Spain. The pair have faced off three times at tour level with the 2-1 head-to-head record leaning towards Shapovalov after a win earlier this year at the Qatar Open but this looks set to be a proper battle. With world number 13 Shapovalov nowhere near his best, Pospisil is exactly the kind of player able to work out a way to an upset here if he can find his best on Saturday. None of their three matches have seen more than two sets yet, so taking Pospisil to win at least one here looks a shrewd move.
