World number two Daniil Medvedev will play his first match since winning the US Open last month - the first Grand Slam title of his career. The 25-year-old completely outplayed a physically and emotionally spent Novak Djokovic to win in straight sets at Flushing Meadows and he is likely to push on from that achievement where so many other players have faltered. Medvedev has won four Masters titles and all of them on hardcourts, which sets him as a solid favourite to lift the title at Indian Wells. The only thing that could hold him back is the heat, with the ice-cold Russian occasionally melting in excessive temperatures on tour, and a lapse in concentration following the best win of his career.
World number 57 Mackenzie McDonald beat in-form James Duckworth in straight sets on Thursday to reach the second round at Indian Wells for a second time, with Medvedev the man to beat him at this stage back in 2019. The 26-year-old is back up to his career-best ATP world ranking first set in 2019 after reaching a first ATP 500 event final in Washington, where he lost to Jannik Sinner.
THE PREDICTION
McDonald would have to provide the performance of his career here to beat world number two and US Open champion Daniil Medvedev and the odds are stacked against him. The American should pull a sizable portion of the Indian Wells crowd and his tireless ethic backed by that support could see him upset a few players in this draw – but most likely not Medvedev. The Russian has won all four meetings between the two, including at this stage in the last edition of the tournament. Medvedev has proven in the past to be excellent at avoiding the tournament-winning curse with several streaks and he should be able to start fast here with a straight-sets victory.
